چکیده

The effects of physosti~ine, nicotine and scopolamine were studied on the activity of single lateral geniculate neurons in the acute cat. Most of the lateral geniculate neurons selected were P-cells. These increased their responses to ipsilateral optic tract and midbrain reticular formation stimulation. Nicotine and physostigmine in doses of 25 pg/kg i.v. significantly increased the spontaneous firing rate of single geniculate neurons. Scopolamine in a dose of 0.5 mg/kg i.v. depressed their firing rates to control levels. Physostigmine enhanced their post-stimulus discharge rate to optic nerve stimulation. This enhancement was depressed by scopolamine. The effects of midbrain reticular formation stimulation were further enhanced by physosti~ine and reduced by scopolamine in about 86 % of lateral geniculate neurons studied. Generally, the effects of trains of pulses to the reticular formation (250 Hz/set, 50 msec train duration, 0.05-0.1 msec pulses) were more marked than single stimuli. It is concluded that a major cholinergic facilitatory system exists which influences lateral genicuiate neurons. It is postulated that this involves the reticular formation. Evidence is presented for a predominant muscarinic cholinergic mechanism.

Cholinergic Activation of M2 Receptors Leads to Context-Dependent Modulation of Feedforward Inhibition in the Visual Thalamus

In many brain regions, inhibition is mediated by numerous classes of specialized interneurons, but within the rodent dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), a single class of interneuron is present. dLGN interneurons inhibit thalamocortical (TC) neurons and regulate the activity of TC neurons evoked by retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), thereby controlling the visually evoked signals reaching the...

Cellular mechanisms underlying cholinergic and noradrenergic modulation of neuronal firing mode in the cat and guinea pig dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus.

The functional properties, ionic basis, and possible convergence and interaction of postsynaptic actions mediated by muscarinic and alpha 1-adrenergic receptors were examined in cat and guinea pig dorsal lateral geniculate (LGNd) neurons maintained in thalamic slices in vitro. The possible involvement of GTP-binding proteins was also examined. Extracellular recordings from cat LGNd revealed the...

On and off sublaminae in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the ferret.

Like the retinal ganglion cells from which they receive their input, most relay neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus have ON- or OFF-center receptive fields with antagonistic surrounds. In the cat, neurons with these two types of receptive fields are anatomically intermingled, even though the ON and OFF systems are functionally segregated. In the ferret, there is a sublamination of the ret...

THE JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE NEUROLOGY 334:410-430 (1993) Evidence That Cholinergic Axons From the Parabrachial Region of the Brainstem Are the Exclusive Source of Nitric Oxide in the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus of the Cat

We investigated the source of axons and terminals in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus that stain positively for NADPH-diaphorase. The functional significance of such staining is that NADPH-diaphorase is identical to the enzyme nitric oxide synthetase, and thus it is thought to reveal cells and axons that use nitric oxide as a neuromodulator. Within the lateral geniculate and adjacent perige...

Brief Communications A New Code for Contrast in the Primate Visual Pathway

We characterize a hitherto undocumented type of neuron present in the regions bordering the principal layers of the macaque lateral geniculate nucleus. Neurons of this type were distinguished by a high and unusually regular maintained discharge that was suppressed by spatiotemporal modulation of luminance or chromaticity within the receptive field. The response to any effective stimulus was a r...
